In late September Microsoft released Office 2019 for both Windows 10 and Mac users.

The catch, for now, is that it's only available to volume licensing customers; meaning Office 2019 is only available to organisations licensing the software for five or more individuals.

According to Microsoft's Office and Windows marketing corporate vice president Jared Spataro, the product is expected to become available to all other consumers sometime in October or November.

Some of the benefits in the update include, for Window's users, access to new apps including Access, Project, Publisher and Visio. Users installing Office 2019 for the first time on a Windows platform will receive OneNote for Windows 10 by default, in lieu of the desktop version of the app (OneNote 2016).

Further benefits include new IT value for "enhanced security and streamlined administration". In 2013, Microsoft introduced Click-to-Run (C2R), a technology which deploys and updates Office across hundreds of millions of devices globally.

With Office 2019, Microsoft is moving the on-premises versions of Office to C2R to both improve security and reduce costs. Advantages of C2R include "predictable monthly security updates, up-to-date apps on installation, reduced network consumption through Windows 10 download optimisation technology, and an easy upgrade path to Office 365 ProPlus".
